Syros: Star Flyer makes emergency call

The sailing cruise ship Star Flyer made an unscheduled call at the port of Ermoupoli on Thursday morning, 6 August, shortly after 11:30. The arrival was not part of the ship’s original schedule. According to reports, the cruise ship was unable to approach and remain at Mykonos due to adverse weather conditions in the area, with strong winds affecting the Aegean. The ship’s management altered its voyage plan and headed for Syros.

The Star Flyer eventually docked safely at Ermoupoli’s cruise pier. Crucial to the safe arrival, as reported, was the assistance of the island’s pilot service, which guided the vessel into port under difficult conditions. According to the schedule released, the ship was expected to depart from Ermoupoli the same evening, at 22:30. The number of passengers aboard the ship was not announced.

The call was carried out following coordination with local port authorities, as an unscheduled cruise ship approach requires immediate availability of a pier berth and an available pilot. No problem was reported during the ship’s stay in port, nor any incident involving passengers or crew. It has not been made known whether the change of schedule also affected other stops on the ship’s Aegean itinerary.

Diversions of cruise routes within the Cyclades are not a rare occurrence in August. Meltemi winds, which occur systematically during this period in the central Aegean, regularly force scheduled ships to change the order of their approaches or bypass ports that are more exposed to northerly winds. Sailing cruise ships, due to their characteristics, are particularly sensitive to strong wind conditions during mooring.

For Syros, the incident highlights a role that the port of Ermoupoli is repeatedly called upon to play during the high season. It is among the few Cycladic ports that can absorb an unscheduled approach within a short time frame, having a dedicated cruise pier and pilot service. This capability has practical significance both for the safety of ships and for the local economy, as passengers disembark and move around the town.

It has not been announced whether this particular incident will lead to any change in the scheduling of the ship’s approaches or in the management of unscheduled calls by the competent services. It also remains an open question how many similar diversions have been recorded this year at the port of Ermoupoli, as no aggregate data has been released.
