Syros: Manos Armakolas became independent

Municipal councilor Manos Armakolas left the ruling faction of the Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis on Monday 21 September 2026, becoming independent from the municipal majority scheme, according to reports from cyclades24.gr and naxostimes.gr on 24 September 2026. The development became public three days after his decision.

According to the same reports, Mr. Armakolas cited as reasons for his decision lack of substantive coordination, cooperation and common understanding within the faction, as well as issues concerning the distribution of responsibilities. These are the reasons that he himself presented publicly for his decision, without any official response from the municipal authority being recorded so far on these specific points. According to the reports, he has not named specific persons or decisions that led to his decision, limiting himself to a more general reference to issues of faction functioning. According to the reports, Mr. Armakolas chose to publicize the reasons for his decision through his own statement, without participating in public confrontation with other faction members.

The departure of another municipal councilor from the majority changes the balance in the Syros-Hermoupolis municipal council, at a time when the municipal authority is called upon to manage in parallel other issues that occupy local society, apart from internal issues of the majority, such as infrastructure and financial issues, such as the recent increase in water prices by DEYA Syros.
