Ermoupoli: seafront to close for the procession

Temporary traffic measures will apply in the land zone of the port of Ermoupoli on Friday, 14 August, due to the celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The measure was issued under Decision No. 26/2026 of the Syros Port Authority and was also announced by the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupoli. It is a measure taken every year to facilitate the procession. The decision applies exclusively to the period of the ceremony and does not extend to other days. Drivers are asked to take the changes into account when planning their movements.

The vehicle traffic ban covers Akti Stratarchou Papagou and Akti Ethnikis Antistaseos streets. The section being closed runs from the junction of Dodekanisou Street with Akti Stratarchou Papagou, near a well-known shop, to the junction of Eleftheriou Venizelou with Akti Ethnikis Antistaseos, at the point of the Statue of Victory. This is the city’s main seafront thoroughfare. A large share of Ermoupoli’s commercial and tourist traffic is concentrated in this stretch. The traffic suspension therefore also affects access to the port.

The ban takes effect on Friday, 14 August 2026, at 20:30 and lasts until the end of the procession. The exact end time is not specified in the decision, as it depends on the duration of the ceremony. The announcement does not mention alternative routes or special parking arrangements. Residents and visitors will need to plan their movements accordingly. Police and the coast guard are expected to manage traffic at the boundaries of the closed section.

The procession of the Holy Icon of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is one of the most important religious events in Ermoupoli. The procession crosses the seafront, which also serves as the natural gathering place for the faithful. Attendance has grown significantly in recent years, as it coincides with the peak period of tourist traffic. Syros welcomes several times its winter population in August. The combination of these two factors explains the need for preventive traffic measures.

The island is already in a period of heavy traffic, with ships to the Cyclades recording occupancy rates approaching 96%. Ermoupoli also functions as a response hub for the rest of the islands in the cluster. Its port serves a significant number of daily routes to and from Piraeus. Increased vehicle traffic in the land zone is a consistent feature of the period. Friday’s measures will be implemented within this context.

Similar measures are being applied on other Cycladic islands for the mid-August celebrations. In Tinos, where the pilgrimage draws the largest number of visitors, a detailed programme has been announced with what closes on 14 and 15 August. Local authorities recommend keeping up to date via official announcements. Decisions by port authorities are posted on their websites and shared with local media. Visitors arriving on the island on the same day are asked to take the measures into account.
