Ermoupoli: traffic measures for the White Night

The centre of Ermoupoli will close to vehicles on the evening of Saturday 22 August 2026, because of the festive commercial event “White Night”. According to an announcement by the Municipality of Syros – Ermoupoli, published by Cyclades24 and naxostimes.gr on Wednesday 19 August, vehicle traffic is banned on the section of Stamatiou Proiou Street that begins at the junction with Eleftheriou Venizelou and ends at the junction with Keas Street. The ban applies from 19:00 to 24:00 and rests on decision no. 2501/10/818-a’/09-08-2026 of the Cyclades Police Directorate, issued on 9 August, two weeks before the event.

“White Night” is the evening on which the shops of Ermoupoli stay open late, with offers and parallel events on the main streets. The section being pedestrianised is precisely the town’s commercial spine: Stamatiou Proiou links the Eleftheriou Venizelou area with the uphill lanes towards Keas Street and concentrates most of the retail activity. The choice of that particular five-hour window — from sunset until midnight — covers the hours of greatest footfall, while the municipality describes the arrangements as temporary and asks residents for their understanding of the changes, which, as it says, are judged necessary for the smooth running of the event.

For a town that in summer receives ferry passengers every day, temporarily removing cars from the main commercial street is not only a safety measure. It is also a brief test of how Ermoupoli works when pedestrians have control of the public space, an issue that keeps returning to the debate about traffic in the centre. Over the same period it has been recorded that increased policing is easing congestion in the centre of the town, in a season during which Ermoupoli functions at once as the administrative capital of the Cyclades, as a transit port and as a tourist destination.

Drivers travelling through the centre on Saturday 22 August will need to plan alternative routes and parking outside the closed section, as vehicles found inside the zone after 19:00 may have difficulty getting out. The Municipality of Syros – Ermoupoli has not announced additional measures, such as a temporary parking ban on neighbouring streets or extra local bus services. The event is part of the packed programme of this summer on Syros, which is also linked to the celebration of 200 years of Ermoupoli.
