Sifnos: marine pollution at Vathy beach

Marine pollution at “Vathy” beach in Sifnos was identified around midday on Friday 21 August 2026, following a report that reached the island’s Port Authority. Hellenic Coast Guard officers went to the scene immediately and found a black substance of unclear origin in the sea, with a strong bad smell. According to the authorities’ description, the substance covered an area about 200 metres long, running parallel to the coastline. The incident was found on one of the busiest days of the season for the bay.

A preliminary investigation into the incident is being carried out by the Sifnos Port Station, and the relevant services have also been informed. The origin of the substance remains unclear and no cause has been officially confirmed. In the two reports that recorded the incident, from Kykladiki and naxostimes.gr, the description is identical regarding the extent, colour and smell, with neither source attributing the pollution to a specific activity, facility or vessel. The announcement itself uses the term “of unclear origin,” meaning that at the time of the inspection even the type of substance had not been identified. It is not known whether samples were taken from the water, nor how long the officers’ inspection at the scene lasted.

Vathy is located on the southwestern side of Sifnos and is one of the island’s busiest bays in August, both for swimmers and for pleasure boats anchoring in the enclosed cove. A pollution incident at such a location and at such a time has a direct impact on use of the beach, on the restaurants around the bay and on the destination’s image, while the enclosed shape of the bay limits the renewal of the water. As of 25 August 2026, no development in the preliminary investigation nor completion of clean-up works at the site had been announced. The critical question the investigation must answer is identifying the substance, since both the method of removing it and locating its source depend on this. Port authorities have not given a timeline for the results of any sampling, nor have they announced whether the beach remained open for swimming in the meantime. Any attribution of responsibility requires the preliminary investigation to be completed and the case file forwarded to the relevant prosecutor’s office. Until then, the only confirmed information remains the 21 August inspection and the 200-metre extent recorded by port officers. Neither source mentions a complaint from any island body or association about the incident.
