Santorini: huge crowd at the Synapantima ton Borianon

The Synapantima ton Borianon gathering was held at Emporio on Thira before a large crowd, on the day of the Dormition of the Virgin 2026. The event was jointly organised by the Cultural Association of Emporio, Thira, and the Association of Emporio and Perissa People of Thira Everywhere “Agios Spyridon”, and drew residents, visitors and Santorinians who return to the island in August. The municipal car park at Emporio, where the event was staged, was packed, while according to the report the strong presence of young people stood out.

Appearing on the music stage were Vangelis Sigalas, Antonis Vassalos, Nikos Vassalos, Averkios Vassalos, Giannis Raptis and Lambros Galaios, with a programme drawn from the island repertoire and the celebration lasting until the early hours of the morning. The term “Borianoi” refers to the inhabitants of the southern settlements of Thira, with Emporio and Pyrgos as their main centres, and the name of the event captures precisely its character as an annual meeting of the local community.

The importance of such events on Santorini goes beyond entertainment. On an island where the economy and daily life are organised around the mass tourism of the Caldera, the settlements of southern and eastern Thira keep a different rhythm, and the cultural associations act as a central mechanism of cohesion. The Dormition brings back the largest number of expatriates to their villages, which explains why the calendar of events thickens around that particular date.

Emporio, one of the oldest settlements on the island with its preserved medieval Kastello, lies about twelve kilometres from Fira and serves the beaches of Perissa and Perivolos. The organisers have established the Synapantima as an annual institution, with an emphasis on the participation of local musicians. Similar initiatives of local self-organisation are recorded on other Cycladic islands too, from Naxos to Mykonos, where associations are taking on an ever greater role in sustaining community life.
