Paros: Organizations rally after major wildfire

Dozens of associations and organizations on Paros call for a protest gathering on Saturday, 8 August at 19:00 at Mandos Mavrogenis Square in Paroikia. The call is accompanied by a joint statement and the slogan ‘Paros cannot endure further suffering’. This represents one of the largest mobilizations by island organizations in recent years, bringing together cultural, environmental, and professional associations from different parts of Paros.

The catalyst is the major wildfire that broke out in late July, originating from the island’s waste disposal site. The fire burned vast areas and exposed, according to the statement, years of problems in infrastructure management and protection of the region. The matter is under judicial investigation and those involved are fully covered by the presumption of innocence until final court judgment.

The demands put forth in the joint statement are specific. Immediate intervention is sought in waste management, enhanced fire protection, execution of flood prevention works, and restoration of burnt areas. An additional demand calls for support of affected producers, as well as modern recycling infrastructure that will reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfill disposal.

The organizations also seek a greater role for local government in decisions affecting the island. The waste management issue on Paros has been a concern for years, with the landfill operating near its capacity limits and discussion on a processing facility remaining open. The process involves the municipality, the regional waste management body, and the project contractor.

For Paros, the mobilization coincides with the peak of the tourist season, when the island’s population multiplies and waste production reaches its highest point. The choice of timing gives the message greater visibility, as Paroikia is the busiest spot on the island in August. The matter continues in parallel with an ongoing legal process.
