Paros: gang dismantled over 25 home burglaries

An organisation alleged to have been carrying out burglaries at homes in Paros has been dismantled by the island’s Police Station, according to figures released by the authorities. A total of 25 burglaries, completed and attempted, were solved, alleged to have been committed from 29 July to 21 August 2026. Four people were arrested, aged 20, 23, 38 and 50, against whom a case file was opened for forming a criminal organisation, aggravated theft and, in some cases, simple complicity. The three-week period coincides with the peak of tourist traffic on the island.

The case opened on the evening of Friday 21 August. Patrolling officers first brought in the 50-year-old, whom they located near a home where a burglary had occurred. Searches followed at one home and three vehicles. Seized were 44,565 euros, 440 pounds sterling and 250 US dollars, as well as jewellery, wristwatches, clothing, footwear and accessories. Burglary tools and clothing were also found, while one passenger vehicle was impounded. The range of items found, from cash in three different currencies to personal belongings, is consistent with the number of cases attributed to this case file. The four people arrested are presumed innocent until proven otherwise by a court.

For Paros, which in August hosts a population many times its permanent size, the string of burglaries occupied residents and visitors for three weeks. The number of cases solved shows the incidents were scattered across different areas of the island, which is why the police investigation ultimately relied on patrolling rather than a single complaint. Those arrested were brought before the Syros Court of First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, which has jurisdiction over the Cyclades. The case file also includes the offence of forming a criminal organisation, which, if established, leads to a heavier sentencing framework than individual burglaries. The next step is the defendants’ statements and a decision on whether they will remain in pre-trial detention until the case is heard. Police have not announced whether other individuals are being sought, nor whether the seized items have been matched to specific victims, a process that usually requires identification by the victims themselves.
