Naxos: fire contained in Mikri Vigla

Fire broke out on Saturday afternoon, August 8 in Mikri Vigla on Naxos near the beach and was quickly contained following immediate mobilization of island forces. The fire consumed reeds and dry grass—materials that spread rapidly under strong wind conditions. The location is one of the busiest beach zones on western Naxos during peak summer months.

A passing witness spotted the fire and alerted the Fire Service. Firefighting forces and municipal tanker from the Naxos and Small Cyclades Municipality responded, while a firefighting helicopter based on Naxos provided aerial support. One dwelling immediately adjacent to the fire location remained unharmed throughout the operation. No injuries were reported.

The Mayor of Naxos and Small Cyclades Dimitris Lianos and Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Nikos Sideris arrived on scene and monitored the operation. After extinguishing the main fire, forces remained in the area on alert for any re-ignitions, as fuel and winds maintained risk at elevated levels even after containment.

A firefighting helicopter stationed on Naxos is critical for protecting the Cyclades during summer months. Islands have limited ground forces and vast distances between them, so immediate aerial intervention without deployment from mainland Greece drastically reduces response time. Coordination between Fire Service and municipal equipment like tankers bridges the gap during those critical early minutes.

The incident serves as a warning for Naxos, coinciding with category 4 fire danger forecast for the next day across the Cyclades. The island already has traffic bans in forest areas and NATURA zones during afternoon and evening hours. A fire in dry grass near homes and tourist facilities under strong meltemia could quickly develop into a serious emergency. The cause remains unknown, and no official extent-of-damage estimate has been released.
