Naxos: two injured in a crash on the Chalkeio road

Two people were injured in a road accident that occurred at around 07:00 on the morning of Friday 21 August 2026 on the provincial road between Chora and Chalkeio on Naxos, at the height of a petrol station. The vehicle was carrying two people aged 20, a man who was at the wheel and a woman. The car was travelling from the direction of the villages towards Chora when it left the road and struck a tree at the roadside with force. Forces of the Naxos Fire Service, an ambulance of the National Emergency Aid Centre and officers of the Hellenic Police rushed to the scene, and the officers directed traffic there for as long as the operation lasted.

The two occupants were freed by four firefighters, who worked with two vehicles and used special rescue tools, as the two young people had been trapped inside the crushed car. The two injured were then taken to the Naxos Hospital, where they received first aid. The 20-year-old female passenger was later transferred by ship to a hospital in Athens. The state of health of the two injured has not been officially announced, nor the type and seriousness of their injuries, and it has not become known whether the 20-year-old driver remained in the island’s hospital. Neither of the two occupants is named.

The authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident and a case file was drawn up for dangerous driving and for causing bodily harm through a road accident. The case file is part of the standard procedure followed in road accidents involving injuries and does not prejudge the existence of liability, which is a matter for the courts. The cause that took the vehicle off the road has not been announced by the police and any version of the causes remains, so far, unconfirmed. It has not become known whether a second vehicle was involved, whether there were eyewitnesses or whether the condition of the road surface and the lighting are being examined as factors. Nor has it been announced against which person the case file was drawn up. For everyone involved the presumption of innocence applies until a final ruling.

The axis linking Chora with the villages of the Naxos interior, among them Chalkeio, carries heavier traffic during the summer months, with locals and visitors travelling daily towards the two ends of the route. The same period coincides with increased movement at the island’s port too, which, according to an earlier announcement, is closing to vehicles on 22 and 23 August. The transfer of the injured woman by ship is a further reminder that island connections remain critical for cases that cannot be dealt with locally.
