Mykonos: theft of €42,000 watches solved

Officers of the Mykonos Police Sub-Directorate have solved a case involving the theft of two high-value watches from a hotel room on the island. The case was concluded on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, following investigation of a related complaint filed with police authorities. Two foreign nationals, aged 27 and 31, were identified, and a case file was opened against them for theft as a joint offence. The investigation was based on evidence gathered from the property and the surrounding area. The presumption of innocence applies until a court ruling is issued.

According to the police statement, the theft was committed in the morning hours of 9 August 2026. The two women are alleged to have taken two watches from the room, with a combined estimated value of €42,000. The victim is a 27-year-old foreign national who was staying in the room in question. The complaint was filed shortly after the loss was discovered. Police did not disclose the name of the hotel or other details that would allow those involved to be identified.

When the two women were brought in, one of the two watches was found in their possession. The item was seized and returned to its lawful owner, as the procedure requires. The second watch is not reported as having been recovered in the authorities’ statement. The search for it continues as part of the preliminary investigation. The two women who were arrested are expected to be brought before the relevant judicial authorities.

Thefts from hotel rooms and rented accommodation are a recurring phenomenon on the major tourist islands during peak months. Mykonos, with its large number of high-category properties and heavy visitor traffic, records a significant number of such complaints every summer. The island’s police forces have been reinforced for the period. Solving cases of this type often relies on footage from accommodation security cameras. The incident adds to a series of police cases recorded on Mykonos in recent times. Among them, the arrest of a driver over a bag and watch worth €75,000 in early August. Cases of theft of valuables from visitors share common features in their method. Police are examining whether there is a connection between some of them. No such link has been announced so far.

Alongside the thefts, the island’s authorities have also stepped up operations against drug trafficking, with a recent example being the case involving 4.4 kilograms of cannabis. Police presence on the island is reinforced every summer with staff deployed from other services. Mykonos has a Police Sub-Directorate, a service of upgraded status relative to the size of its permanent population. This reinforcement reflects the volume of incidents during the summer period.
