Milos: Sailboat in distress in Adamantas port

A mobilization of the Coast Guard was recorded in the early morning hours of Monday, September 28, 2026 on Milos, following notification of a sailboat found in distress within Adamantas port, the central port of the island. The Milos Port Authority was notified by the Unified Coordination Center for Search and Rescue of the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard (H.C.-H.C.G.), which coordinates search and rescue operations at the national level, receiving notifications from sailors, observers or automatic vessel detection systems.

With the receipt of the notification, the local emergency plan was immediately implemented, a planned procedure that is activated in every maritime incident within or near a port. Patrol boat of the Coast Guard rushed to the area, as well as patrol vehicle of the H.C.-H.C.G. from land, for investigation and handling of the incident, according to the established procedure followed in similar incidents within ports. Also participating in the operation was the cargo-lighter “FLORA B” Port Authority Lavrio 985, which found the sailboat empty of passengers, a factor that initially caused concern for the fate of any persons aboard before it was found that the vessel was unguarded.

With the assistance of the “FLORA B,” the sailboat was towed and safely entered Milos port. According to the Coast Guard notification, there were no injuries from the incident, and no marine pollution was detected in the Adamantas area, which regularly serves ferry connections and significant tourist traffic of recreational vessels during autumn, with many vessels remaining anchored in the bay for long periods. It has not been reported whether the owner or crew of the vessel was found or is being sought, nor whether the sailboat was recently anchored or was swept into the port by weather.

The incident falls within the usual operational activity of the Coast Guard in the Cyclades islands, where recreational vessels and sailing boats move throughout autumn, a period when weather conditions in the Aegean can change abruptly, making the rapid response of the Coast Guard crucial to avoiding more serious consequences. The immediate activation of the local emergency plan and the assistance of the “FLORA B” allowed for a safe outcome without injuries or environmental impacts, while maintaining safe navigation within the port during the operation. The Milos Port Authority has not announced further details about the identity, flag or exact cause of the vessel’s distress, issues expected to be clarified within the framework of the investigation that follows every such event, as is customary in similar incidents in Cycladic ports.
