Cyclades: Very high fire risk Saturday

The Autonomous Directorate of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis of the South Aegean Region announced Category 4 fire danger for Saturday 15 August 2026 for both the Cycladic and Dodecanese Prefectures, based on the Daily Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection. This highest alert classification triggers heightened readiness across all relevant services and activates contingency protocols island-wide. Strong northerly winds persisting through recent days, combined with exceptionally low humidity and dry brush vegetation, create ideal conditions for rapid fire propagation.

Under law 998 of 1979, Category 4 activates mandatory prohibition on transit, stay, and circulation in NATURA network areas, forest ecosystems, parks and groves. For Cyclades, restrictions apply to designated zones on Andros and Naxos specified in Decision 843 dated 4 May 2026, posted on Diavgeia with reference number ADA. Restrictions run 14:00–06:00 next day, covering afternoon and night hours when fire detection grows difficult, visibility diminishes, and aerial firefighting assets are curtailed or grounded. Violation carries substantial fines and potential criminal liability.

Assumption Day timing is not coincidental. August 15 concentrates summer’s peak visitor influx to islands, hosting religious festivals, mass excursions to vacation properties and outdoor evening celebrations that multiply ignition sources exponentially. Cycladic islands face unique fire vulnerability due to low vegetation density, minimal forest cover, sparse infrastructure for evacuation, and difficult maritime logistics for emergency response. The devastating 28 July Paros fire, which consumed significant forested area, destroyed homes and properties, and displaced communities, left vivid memories and heightened local authority sensitivity to prevention measures.

The Region issued urgent appeals to farmers, ranchers and beekeepers to cease all work producing sparks—wheel grinding, metal welding, hive smoking operations. Identical restrictions apply to outdoor grilling, agricultural residue burning and fireworks displays—a tradition deeply linked to August 15 festivities on many islands where celebratory pyrotechnics are customary. Citizens are urged to report immediately to Fire Service emergency line 199 upon spotting any smoke or active flame, without attempting self-rescue extinguishment in dangerously strong gusting winds that reverse wind direction unpredictably.
