3.7 Richter quake off Amorgos

An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale occurred off Amorgos at 15:08 on Wednesday 16 September 2026, according to a report by newpost.gr, citing the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. According to the same data, the epicentre of the tremor was located nine kilometres south of Arkesini, with a focal depth of 12.5 kilometres, a distance that places the event among the intermediate-depth seismic events regularly recorded in the sea area around the island. The time of the recording, in the early afternoon hours, meant that the tremor was felt during a period of intense daily activity on the island.

The sea area between Amorgos and Santorini is known as one of the most seismically active zones in the Aegean and has repeatedly made the news in recent years, prompted by earlier periods of intense seismic activity in the wider region. It is within this geological context that the new tremor was recorded, felt across the wider area of Amorgos, one of the easternmost islands of the Cyclades. The Geodynamic Institute systematically monitors seismicity in this particular sea area, regularly recording tremors of varying magnitude there, part of a wider monitoring effort covering the entire Aegean. Daily life in Amorgos does not appear to have been affected by the phenomenon, which was regarded as just another of the mild-intensity seismic events periodically recorded in the area. The absence of damage is also attributed to the magnitude of the tremor, which remains at levels that usually do not cause visible effects in inhabited areas, something that appears to be the case here too, both in the main settlement and in the island’s smaller settlements. Residents appear to have faced the phenomenon with the same calm they usually show in similar low-intensity incidents, without any emergency mobilisation of local services being required.

The incident is currently recorded as an isolated one, with the relevant services continuing their regular monitoring of seismic activity in the sea area between Amorgos and Santorini, as happens with every similar recording in the area, with no additional update on the event having been given so far.
