Amorgos: €2.2M for nursery

Amorgos Municipality has secured €2.2 million for construction of a new Early Childhood Facility in Katapola, the island’s main harbor settlement. The amount comes from the South Aegean Regional Development Programme 2026–2030, with official notice delivered by the Regional Authority. This ranks among the island’s largest social infrastructure projects in recent years, addressing a critical gap for the roughly 1,900 permanent residents of Amorgos.

Municipal Mayor Eleftherios Karaiskos thanked Economy Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis, and Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarcko. The mayor emphasized that the funding represents a significant development for Amorgos and concrete investment in the children and families choosing to build permanent lives on the island.

Childcare provision on small Cycladic islands has practical and economic implications. Without organized facilities, one parent—typically the mother—must limit or suspend work, a burden that falls hardest during peak tourism months when labor demand peaks. The absence of quality childcare infrastructure becomes an indirect driver of population loss to larger islands or the mainland.

Construction logistics in island settings present particular challenges, with material transport depending entirely on ferry schedules and completed infrastructure affecting both costs and timelines. Next steps include study maturation, tender, and project assignment. No delivery schedule has been announced. Amorgos has secured funding in recent years for other infrastructure projects, including improvements to port facilities and the road network.
