Viannos: father and son trapped after crash

Two passenger cars collided at midday on Thursday, August 20, in Kato Viannos, at the southeastern edge of the Heraklion Regional Unit. According to information made public so far, the two vehicles came into contact under circumstances that remain unclear, and one of them veered off the road, ending up on an embankment beside the carriageway. A father and son were inside it and became trapped, unable to get out on their own. Fire Service crews were mobilised to the scene and carried out the extrication, then handed the two occupants over to the EKAB ambulance crew. Both were conscious when handed over and were taken to the hospital on duty for examination. The causes of the collision are under investigation by the competent authorities, which have given no further details about the incident.

Extricating occupants from a vehicle that has ended up on an embankment follows a specific sequence of actions and is among the most time-consuming operations the Fire Service carries out in road accidents. The bodywork must first be stabilised so it does not shift during access, power and fuel supply must be cut, and then an opening must be created using hydraulic tools, without worsening the condition of those trapped. At the same time, the EKAB crew monitors the injured while they are still inside the vehicle. Once the operation is complete, the case passes to the Traffic Police, which conducts a preliminary investigation: an on-site inspection, recording of impact points and marks, a diagram, taking of statements and the required checks on the drivers. The case file compiled is forwarded to the competent prosecutor’s office, and until the process is complete, no version of how the collision happened is considered confirmed, nor is any responsibility attributed.

Kato Viannos belongs to the Municipality of Viannos, the easternmost municipality of the Heraklion Regional Unit, with its seat in Ano Viannos. It is an area where the terrain changes abruptly, as settlements spread from the slopes of Dikti toward the southern shores of the Libyan Sea, and the road network connecting them is largely provincial, with bends, elevation changes and stretches where the road’s edge drops onto an embankment. This explains why a vehicle veering off the road develops here into an incident involving entrapment, while also increasing the response time of rescue services, which cover long distances to reach Heraklion’s hospital. As for the incident itself, however, much remains unknown: the number of occupants in the second vehicle has not been announced, nor whether any of them needed medical care.
