Rethymno: 21-year-old motorcyclist killed

A 21-year-old motorcyclist lost his life late on the evening of Wednesday 19 August, after a collision with a taxi in the area of Platanias, Rethymno. According to Rethemnos News, the taxi was travelling from Heraklion towards Rethymno when the collision occurred, while the motorcycle was travelling in the opposite direction. Cretalive places the site of the accident on a service road in the same area. The two descriptions are not contradictory, since this section of the road network has service roads on either side of the main axis, but the exact spot has not been confirmed by any official announcement. The 21-year-old, according to the information so far, was wearing a protective helmet. His name is not being made public by this newsroom.

The taxi driver was arrested as part of the prescribed procedure and was expected to be brought before the prosecutor. This is a standard step in every fatal road accident and does not prejudge the existence of responsibility: the circumstances in which the collision occurred are being investigated and the man arrested has not been found guilty of any offence. The preliminary inquiry is being conducted by the Rethymno Traffic Police, which is gathering evidence, statements and technical data in order to clarify the causes and the way in which the collision happened. It has not been made known whether a toxicology test was carried out or whether there were witnesses, nor whether the spot has lighting and road markings. Nor has the age of the taxi driver been given, or any data on the speed of the two vehicles at the moment of the collision, information that normally emerges from expert examination rather than from initial reports.

The accident adds to a series of serious road collisions in the regional unit within a few days and brings back an issue the local community raises persistently: the safety of two-wheelers on the road network around the city of Rethymno, particularly at night and on the service roads, where speeds remain high but lighting and signage are often lacking. A few days earlier an incident had been recorded in which a two-wheeler struck a pedestrian on a crossing inside the city. Young motorcycle riders have consistently been the hardest-hit category in Crete’s road accidents, where the two-wheeler is not a leisure choice but a daily means of travel for work and study. In August, when traffic peaks and journeys continue until late, that exposure grows, while many sections of the old network still function as local roads without the safety features of a modern highway.

In the coming days the arrested man’s deposition and the prosecuting authority’s decision on criminal proceedings are expected, while the Traffic Police’s expert examination will determine the attribution of responsibility.
