Mylopotamos: Three Arrests Over Minor's Intoxication

The Mylopotamos Police Department carried out three arrests following an incident involving a minor at a community event. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 12, 2026, at a dance event held by a cultural association in the Municipality of Mylopotamos. The minor became intoxicated and was judged to need medical care. She was initially taken for treatment to the Perama Health Centre. She was then transferred to Rethymno Hospital.

Her health condition was not a cause for concern and she was discharged. No details that would allow her identification were released, as is standard in cases involving minors. Police also did not announce the exact location of the event. The incident was noticed during the course of the evening. The medical assessment preceded the police action.

The Mylopotamos Police Department arrested three Greek nationals for endangerment and for violating measures protecting minors from alcohol. Those arrested are the 44-year-old and 42-year-old guardians of the minor, as well as the 29-year-old organiser of the event. All three are expected to appear before the competent prosecutor. The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Mylopotamos Police Department. The presumption of innocence applies until a court ruling is issued.

The arrest of both the guardians and the organiser reflects the two-fold responsibility set out by law. Parents or guardians bear responsibility for supervising a minor. The person responsible for the venue or event bears responsibility for the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors, which is prohibited. The law provides for penalties in both cases. Checks are stepped up during the summer months, when outdoor events multiply.

This is the second such incident in Crete within a few days. Earlier, in Chania, two minors aged 13 and 14 were taken to hospital after consuming alcohol at a party on Agia Apostoli beach. In that case too, the minors’ guardians were arrested. The repetition of such incidents in a short period has drawn public comment in local media. The discussion centres on teenagers and alcohol and on the role of adults.

Early onset of alcohol consumption is a recurring finding in studies on adolescent health in the country. Greece consistently records high rates compared with the European average on related indicators. In local communities, the summer events held by cultural associations are an important part of social life. The presence of minors at them is a given and typically family-oriented. The issue, as it is framed, concerns controlling access to alcoholic beverages.

Rethymno police authorities did not announce whether additional checks will follow at similar events.
