Pyrgos Psilonerou: Beach Party Cancelled to Protect Sea Turtles

A planned beach party at Pyrgos Psilonerou beach in the municipality of Platania was not held following action by ARCHELON. The beach is hosting 66 Caretta caretta nests this year and is in the middle of the hatching period, when newly hatched sea turtles emerge from the sand and head towards the sea, traveling the most critical meters of their lives.

According to ARCHELON, intense artificial lighting, loud music, and increased human presence on a nesting beach can cause premature hatching, trampling of nests, or disorientation of hatchlings, which are drawn towards the light. A hatchling that moves away from the sea becomes exhausted quickly and its survival chances drop dramatically.

The Kontomari Cultural Society, which had organized the event, announced that the party would not take place because the area is part of the Natura network. ARCHELON publicly thanked the Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change, OEPEKA, as well as the cultural society itself for their response, noting that a solution was found without confrontation or administrative intervention.

The western coasts of Chania are among the Caretta caretta nesting areas in Crete, with volunteers identifying and marking nests every summer. The period from mid-summer through September is the most critical, as hatching coincides with the peak of tourist traffic and evening events along the beach.

The cancellation shows that coexistence between entertainment and protection is not automatic, but neither is it impossible. For local societies, the key is early notification of where the nests are located, so that events can be planned in other locations or at other times. In practice, nests are not always visible to those who are not aware of the markers that volunteers place.

It is unclear whether the event will be moved to another location or cancelled altogether for this year. It also remains an open question who has the responsibility for licensing events on beaches within the Natura network and how relevant applications are cross-checked with nest data. It has not been announced whether guidance will be given to local societies regarding other summer events along the beach.

The hatching period continues in the coming weeks and volunteers monitor the nests that have been recorded on a daily basis. The basic protection guidelines for nesting beaches include limiting lighting towards the shore during night hours and avoiding placing objects on the sand. Every successful journey to the sea counts for the survival of the species.
