Knossos: cleaning staff return to restrooms

Cleaning staff returns from Tuesday, August 18, 2026 to the restrooms of the Knossos archaeological site, according to CRETA24. The return came following intervention by the Association of Tourist and Travel Agencies of Crete, which cooperated with the company operating the refreshment facility within the space to cover the cleaning shift again. The issue had arisen because, as the Association states, the workers left in the middle of the tourist season, that is, during peak season for the most important visited archaeological site in Crete.

The Association links the departure to a complaint that had been submitted to the Ministry regarding the condition of the facilities. It characterizes this complaint as “unfair” and claims that it did not reflect the experience of visitors to the site, adding that it had recently proceeded with complete renovation of the restrooms. These details come entirely from the Association’s public statement. No response has been published by the Ministry of Culture, nor by the Heraklion Archaeological Authority, so it is not known exactly what the complaint contained, who submitted it or if it was examined.

For the local tourist market, the issue is not secondary. Knossos attracts the majority of organized day trips starting from Heraklion and from the coastal resorts of the county, with visitors spending considerable time in the space under high temperatures. Support facilities, especially restrooms, are a constant point of complaint in visitor reviews at all major archaeological sites in the country, as demand concentrates in a few hours of the day and in a few locations. Tourist agencies, which are those who receive direct feedback from their customers, therefore have practical reason to intervene when such a service is interrupted in the middle of August. In practice, complaints about support facilities end up in trip reviews and not in those of the archaeological site, so the cost of such an interruption is borne first by market intermediaries.

The incident also highlights a structural issue: the cleaning of support facilities at major archaeological sites is often covered by private concessionaires and not directly by the archaeological service, resulting in service continuity depending on agreements that can be interrupted. The solution described is by definition temporary and it has not been announced whether it will apply until the end of the season or if there will be a permanent settlement for next year.
