Heraklion: brawl in Karavolas, arrests made

A brawl involving five people in the Karavolas area of Heraklion led to the immediate mobilisation of the Hellenic Police and to arrests, at midday on Sunday 16 August 2026. According to CretaOne and Politica.gr, police units arrived at the scene shortly after the call was made and proceeded to take people in for questioning and to make arrests. The exact number of those arrested, their details and the charges brought against them have not been released by the police directorate. The causes that led to the confrontation remain under investigation, and neither source reports injuries requiring hospital treatment.

Those arrested are being taken before the competent prosecuting authority, which will decide whether criminal proceedings will be brought and on what charges. Until a final and irrevocable ruling is issued, everyone involved is presumed innocent; TodayGrid does not publish names or other details that could lead to the identification of private individuals in cases that are at the preliminary investigation stage. It has not been disclosed whether any items were seized or whether weapons were used in the brawl. Karavolas is an area in the west of Heraklion, with a park and open spaces that draw crowds during the summer months, especially in the evening and around midday. Police presence in the wider area had already been reinforced over the 15 August holiday period, as part of the general planning for increased travel and the influx of visitors to the city. Heraklion recorded particularly high numbers over the three-day holiday this year. The open space of the park serves as a meeting point for residents of all ages, particularly at the hours when the temperature drops. Policing in such spaces is generally carried out by foot patrols rather than a permanent presence.

The incident adds to a series of police cases that have preoccupied Crete over the past ten days, from drugs to cases involving minors. During the same period the Hellenic Police announced an intensification of checks on the island’s road network.
