Heraklion: 52-year-old arrested over incident on aircraft

At the Heraklion airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” a 52-year-old passenger was arrested in the early morning hours of Wednesday 23 September 2026, after allegedly attacking other passengers and members of the crew inside the aircraft, according to a report by TA NEA. The incident occurred while the aircraft was still on the parking apron, shortly before it was prepared for takeoff. The man was removed in handcuffs from the cabin before the aircraft began its takeoff sequence, while the flight eventually departed normally for Bucharest, with only a slight delay compared to the scheduled time. The immediate intervention of the crew and airport security personnel appears to have prevented the escalation of the incident during flight.

According to the captain’s report, as conveyed by TA NEA, the passenger “began to provoke tension and disturbance in the cabin”, turning both against the crew and against other passengers. Such types of incidents are usually handled based on established security protocols, which provide for immediate notification of authorities before the aircraft exits onto the takeoff runway—something that appears to have happened in the present case, as the 52-year-old was removed before the flight began its path towards takeoff. The man was arrested on the spot by airport authorities.

The “Nikos Kazantzakis” airport is one of the busiest gateways to Crete, with thousands of passengers passing through its checks daily, especially during months of high tourist traffic. The September period remains of increased passenger traffic, as many visitors extend their vacations on the island after the end of summer, a fact that makes smooth operation of security checks and quick management of emergencies even more critical. The incident comes a few days after another public order case on the island, when authorities proceeded with three arrests for weapons in Messara, reminding that security issues concern the local authorities on more than one front.

The case is expected to be examined by the competent judicial authorities, within the framework of Greek legislation on flight safety and the protection of passengers and crews. So far, no further details have been announced about the identity or motives of the 52-year-old, while the airport authorities have not proceeded with an official announcement beyond what is included in the crew’s report. In the meantime, the incident is expected to also concern the competent civil aviation authorities, which systematically monitor such reports at country level. The flight to Bucharest proceeded normally, with the remaining passengers continuing their journey without further problems.
