VOAK: motorbike crash at the Mochos junction

A collision between a motorbike and a passenger car took place on the afternoon of Sunday 16 August 2026 on the Northern Road Axis of Crete, the VOAK, just past the Mochos junction, on the carriageway running from Heraklion towards Agios Nikolaos. According to the report by Creta24, republished by SKAI Kritis, the young foreign rider of the motorbike was not seriously injured on the basis of initial information. Paramedics of the national ambulance service EKAB and police units rushed to the scene, directing traffic until the vehicles were removed. The exact circumstances of the collision remain under investigation by the Traffic Police.

The effects on traffic were out of all proportion to the severity of the accident. The crash coincided with the peak of the return traffic after the 15 August holiday, with the result that tailbacks of several kilometres formed on the eastbound carriageway. On this stretch the VOAK has one lane in each direction and a hard shoulder of limited width, so that any stationary vehicle translates immediately into a complete halt of the flow. No second accident was reported as a result of the congestion. On days of mass travel, a ten-minute blockage is enough to create a queue of several kilometres, which then takes many times as long to clear. The effect is amplified when there is no parallel network available for a diversion.

The section of the axis east of Heraklion has consistently recorded a high number of incidents, since it serves both through traffic towards Agios Nikolaos and Sitia and local traffic towards the tourist centres of Chersonisos and Malia. The upgrade of the VOAK into a closed motorway is under way section by section, with the greater part of the works concerning the western leg towards Chania. The eastern section continues to operate with its existing geometry, which includes at-grade junctions and points of limited visibility. The Mochos junction is an access point towards the mountain villages of the Municipality of Chersonisos and gathers traffic entering and leaving the main axis. At-grade junctions of this type have been identified by road safety studies as points of increased risk.

The incident falls within a period of frequent road accidents on the Cretan road network, while over the same period the Hellenic Police stepped up traffic checks across the island. It has not been made known whether the rider of the motorbike was taken to hospital for precautionary examinations.
