Gouves: lorry ends up in the sea at the port

A vehicle ended up in the sea at midday on Friday 21 August 2026 at the port of Gouves, in the Municipality of Chersonisos, without anyone being injured. According to Nea Kriti, as soon as the incident became known the Heraklion Port Authority was informed and officers of the Hellenic Coast Guard went to the spot. There they found the vehicle in the water, at a depth of about thirty centimetres, that is a very short distance from the shoreline. The driver was the only person on board and managed to get out of the vehicle unaided before the authorities arrived, while according to the same source he was in good health and did not need to be taken to hospital.

The check that followed found no marine pollution in the area, a detail that matters for a port with tourist traffic in the middle of August. In incidents of this kind the port authority first checks the safety of those on board and then the possibility of fuel or lubricants leaking into the water. The vehicle was lifted out of the sea at the owner’s expense, without any wider operation being required. The exact circumstances in which the vehicle ended up in the water have not been clarified and are being investigated by the competent authorities. It has not become known whether this was a technical fault, a misjudged manoeuvre or some other cause, nor whether the vehicle was parked or in motion at the time of the incident.

The two available sources do not agree on basic elements of the account. Flashnews.gr, in a report published at 14:22, speaks of a car found in the sea and refers to the person involved as a passenger, placing the incident generally in the Chersonisos area. Nea Kriti, in a later report at 18:04, describes a lorry and specifies that the driver was the only person on board, placing the incident specifically at the port of Gouves. This text follows the later and more detailed version, since it includes information from the coast guard’s presence at the scene, without however concealing the discrepancy over the type of vehicle and the role of the person involved. Neither source clarifies exactly when within the midday period the incident occurred.

The port of Gouves lies on the northern coastal front of Heraklion, in one of the most densely touristic zones of Crete, where vehicle traffic close to quaysides and ramps increases during the summer months. The fact that the vehicle was found at a depth of thirty centimetres explains why the person on board was able to get away without help and why the recovery was completed without particular difficulty. The announcements do not indicate whether administrative or criminal proceedings were initiated against anyone, or whether any damage was caused to port infrastructure.
