Hersonissos: elderly woman dies at bus stop

An elderly woman lost her life in Hersonissos, Heraklion, on the evening of Sunday 16 August 2026, after a fall while boarding a bus. According to Politica.gr and CretaOne, the woman was climbing the steps of the vehicle when she lost her balance, fell backwards and struck the back of her body and her head. Despite the efforts made at the scene, she died. The two sources do not agree on her exact age: Politica.gr puts her at around eighty, while CretaOne reports that she was eighty-one. Her details are not being made public.

An ambulance and police units were called to the scene. The exact circumstances of the fall are being investigated by the competent authorities, who will examine whether the vehicle was stationary, what condition the stopping point was in, and whether any external factor was involved. No forensic report has been released to establish whether the death was caused solely by the head injury or whether a sudden medical episode preceded it and caused the loss of balance. Neither source attributes responsibility to any person.

Hersonissos is one of the most densely touristic municipalities in Crete and the intercity bus network is a key means of transport, both for visitors and for permanent residents who do not drive. During the summer months services are frequent and vehicles are often full, while many stops are located at points with heavy traffic, where boarding takes place under time pressure. The accessibility of stops and vehicles for elderly people and those with mobility difficulties has repeatedly been raised as an issue by senior citizens’ organisations across the country, although there is no evidence linking this particular incident to such a cause. In Crete’s intercity bus fleet there are vehicles of different generations, some with low floors and ramps and others with conventional steps. It has not been disclosed which category this particular vehicle belonged to.

The incident occurred on one of the busiest days of the year for the area, as the wave of return journeys began after the 15 August holiday and traffic on Heraklion’s road network remained heavy. The authorities have not announced a timetable for completing the investigation.
