BOAK: Two Crashes in a Row Involve Seven Cars

Two traffic accidents occurred almost back to back on the morning of Thursday, August 13, on the North Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), on the stretch between Platanias and Tavronitis. The first happened shortly after 11am and involved three vehicles. The location is on one of the busiest routes in western Crete. Traffic at that hour was heavy due to the tourist season. A short time later, a second accident occurred on the same stretch of the highway. It involved another four vehicles, bringing the total number to seven. The second incident is attributed to the traffic that had already built up and to drivers being distracted, slowing down to see what had happened. This phenomenon is well known in road safety and is a common cause of secondary accidents. Authorities recommend that drivers avoid unnecessary slowing at accident scenes.

No injuries were reported from either accident. The damage was limited to vehicles, though the impact on traffic was significant. A traffic jam formed on that stretch of the highway for some time. BOAK traffic police rushed to the scene to manage traffic and remove the vehicles. The delays also affected travel to the airport and the region’s ports.

The North Road Axis of Crete is the island’s main road backbone, connecting the four major urban centres. Traffic on it is already particularly heavy due to the tourist season. The stretch between Platanias and Tavronitis serves one of the densest zones of tourist accommodation in western Crete. The combination of local traffic and rental vehicles driven by people unfamiliar with the road increases the risk. Sections of the highway do not have motorway characteristics.

The same morning, a third accident occurred on the old Chania–Kissamos national road, near Makrys Toichos, shortly after 12:00. It involved a car and a motorcycle, with only material damage, but it caused a temporary traffic problem. The three incidents within a few hours reflect the pressure on Chania’s road network. The period coincides with the peak of travel for the mid-August holiday. Authorities have increased their presence on the main routes.

Traffic police have announced increased measures across the island for the holiday period, with an emphasis on prevention. In Heraklion, the service has deployed its entire staff for the exodus. Checks focus on speed, alcohol and improper overtaking. Fatal accidents in Crete have decreased in recent years but remain at high levels. The provincial road network accounts for a significant share of serious accidents.

Drivers are urged to keep safe distances and reduce speed in busy areas. The strong winds expected over the coming days mainly affect two-wheelers and high-sided vehicles.
