Nea Chora: broken pipe, swimming advisory issued

Pavement subsidence on Mitropolitou Kyrillou Street, between Meletiou Metaxaki and Gerasimu Pardalh streets, has ruptured a main sewage pipe in Nea Chora, Chania, causing sewage to overflow into the area’s road network. The Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Chania announced on Tuesday, August 11, that the road remains closed and urged citizens to avoid all contact with area waters until further notice.

The recommendation also includes avoiding swimming at Nea Chora beach as a precaution for public health. Company crews have worked since Monday evening, August 10, clearing manhole covers one by one to relieve pressure on the sewer line and stop the overflow. Sewage flooding in a residential basement had preceded this, an incident demonstrating the scale of pressure on the neighborhood network.

DEWACH vice-chair Niki Apostolaki, speaking on ZARPA RADIO 89.6, described the progress of repairs and repeated the company’s appeal to households not to discard baby wipes and similar materials down drains, as they accumulate and block pipes. The company has not announced a timeline for full site restoration, nor when it estimates the swimming recommendation will be lifted.

Nea Chora is one of Chania’s densely built seaside neighborhoods, with intense tourist and restaurant activity during summer months and a network serving both permanent residents and visitors. Pavement subsidence and pipe rupture occurred at peak season, when sewage network demand is at its yearly highest and any fault becomes immediately visible.

For residents, the immediate concerns are odor, accessibility, and sanitary safety, while for waterfront businesses the swimming avoidance recommendation comes at the heart of the season. The closed road also affects beach access, with vehicles diverted to side streets in the neighborhood and traffic burdened on an already narrow road network.

The cause of subsidence remains unclear—whether soil failure preceded it or the pipe itself deteriorated—and whether a broader network section replacement will be required. Sea water sampling results have not been announced, an element that would determine when the swimming recommendation is lifted. It is also unknown whether damage to the basement of the flooded residence will be repaired.

DEWACH states that work will continue until full flow restoration and pipe repair are complete, with the road returned to traffic once finished. The swimming avoidance recommendation remains in effect until further notice from the company. Residents and visitors are urged to follow official updates before heading to Nea Chora beach in the coming days.
