Western Crete: rain, storms and hail on Sunday

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection, with an updated bulletin issued on Sunday 27 September 2026 citing data from the National Meteorological Service, forecasts for Crete strong rainfall, thunderstorms and possibly hail, with emphasis on the western parts of the island, until the early morning hours of Sunday 27 September 2026. According to the same bulletin, the maximum temperature in the region is expected around 24°C. The phenomenon follows the orange alert that had been issued for Crete on Saturday 26 September 2026.

In the west of Crete, where the greatest intensity of rainfall is located, the areas of Chania and Rethymno are at the centre of the alert, according to hania.news, which mentioned an emergency EMY bulletin specifically for strong rainfall and thunderstorms in western Crete, and to cretaone.gr, which reported an orange alert with emphasis on the west for intense rainfall, thunderstorms and hail. In conditions of intense rainfall and possible hail, particular attention is required in passages through rivers, streams and roads that may flood, as well as in the condition of gutters and drains that must remain clean to avoid water accumulation. Objects in outdoor spaces, courtyards and balconies should be secured, while work in fields and other outdoor work spaces in western Crete may be affected until the early morning hours of Sunday 27 September 2026.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection calls on citizens to avoid passage through rivers, streams and flooded roads, to ensure cleaning of gutters and drains, to secure objects that could cause damage and, in case of hail, to remain inside a building or vehicle. The same announcement emphasizes compliance with the guidance of the authorities for as long as the alert is in effect, that is until the early morning hours of Sunday 27 September 2026. As the bad weather front remains in progress, the development of rainfall and winds in western Crete over the coming hours is expected to determine whether additional guidance from the authorities will be needed.
