Chania: three-day power outages August 22-24

Scheduled power outages will take place in Chania prefecture for three consecutive days, from Saturday, August 22 to Monday, August 24, according to the schedule made known on Thursday, August 20. The first block of work concerns Saturday, August 22, and lasts four and a half hours, from 06:30 to 11:00. During that time, Modi, Gerani, Psathogiannou, Babiolo, Loutraki, Manoliopoulo, Kontomari, Pyrgos Psiloneroy, Xamoudochori, Maleme, Tavronitis from the village centre to the football pitch, Vlacheronitissa and Kamisiana will be without power. This is a continuous zone along the prefecture’s northwestern coast, including both seaside settlements and inland villages fed by the same section of the network.

On Sunday, August 23, the schedule is clearly more extensive geographically and is split into three separate time slots. From 06:00 to 10:00, the outage covers the entire Municipality of Kissamos and the entire Municipality of Kantanos-Selino, meaning the whole of the western and southwestern side of the prefecture within the two municipalities’ boundaries. From 06:00 to 08:30 on the same day, Galatas, Pano Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias will be without power, with exceptions not specified in the announcement, while from 08:30 to 11:30 the outage shifts to Platanias, specifically Kato Gerani. On Monday, August 24, finally, from 06:00 to 09:30, the work concerns Stalos and Agia Marina up to the boundary with Platanias.

The schedule comes with a warning of practical importance for those living or working in these areas: if the work is completed earlier, power is restored before the stated end time, without further notice. For this reason, networks must be treated as live throughout the entire outage period, and any contact with conductors or installations must be avoided. The timing is not neutral: the outages fall at the peak of the tourist season, in areas such as Platanias, Agia Marina, Stalos and Kissamos, where hotel and restaurant activity is at its highest. In addition, power cuts in Crete have this year also affected water supply networks that depend on pumping stations, as seen in Rodia, Malevizi and in Gavdos.

Several details have not been announced and do not emerge from the schedule. The purpose of the work has not been disclosed, that is, whether it involves maintenance, upgrades or the connection of new infrastructure, nor whether the five separate outages are linked as parts of a single project. No provision has been announced for critical uses, such as water pumping stations, cold storage rooms or units serving vulnerable groups, nor whether alternative power supply is planned at any points. In such cases, the responsibility for informing the public usually passes to the municipalities and water supply bodies, which issue separate announcements if an issue arises. Until then, the only certainty is the outage schedule itself, which may be modified or cancelled due to weather or technical conditions, as is generally the case with scheduled network works.
