Chania: work stoppage over the "White Night"

The Chania Labour Centre has called a work stoppage for employees in the city’s retail shops, prompted by the staging of the “White Night”. According to politica.gr, the decision concerns the evening of the event and legally covers those employees who choose not to work beyond their normal hours. In its announcement the union argues that the “White Night” is a commercial celebration for shop owners but turns into a “black night” for private-sector employees, who are asked to work exhausting hours. “Workers are not made of rubber,” the Labour Centre’s text notes pointedly.

The event in question is scheduled for Tuesday 25 August 2026, from early in the afternoon until 23:30, and is organised by the Chamber and the Retailers Association of Chania together with the Region of Crete. It is the fifth such event, with music provided by fourteen DJs and music producers at various points in the city, activities for children on the main streets of the commercial centre and a headline concert by Kostis Maravegias on Plateia 1866, with an opening set by Dimitris Kopsis. In a joint statement, the president of the Chamber, Antonis Rokakis, and the president of the Retailers Association, Dora Kyriakaki, present the initiative as a “tool of solidarity” between Chania’s retail trade and society, and explicitly thank the employees who support it.

The dispute is not new and does not concern the event itself, but the terms under which staff work on an evening of extended hours. The question raised by the union side is a practical one: whether the extra hours are recorded, paid and insured as labour law requires. The organisers, for their part, treat the “White Night” as a boost for local retail at a time when consumption is under pressure. The two readings do not meet: the Chamber speaks of the participation of thousands of consumers and hundreds of traders, while the Labour Centre focuses on the private-sector employees who do not decide their own hours.

The work stoppage does not cancel the event, nor does it oblige shops to close; it functions as a legal framework of protection for any employee who chooses to leave at the end of their normal hours. How much difference it makes in practice will be seen on the evening of Tuesday 25 August and will depend on how many employees make use of it. It has not been announced whether a meeting between the two sides is planned before the event, nor whether the Labour Inspectorate will carry out checks at the shops that evening.
