Chania: New tenure at the Municipal Nursing Home

The new board of the Municipal Nursing Home of Chania was sworn in on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in a ceremony held at the facility itself. The oath ceremony was administered by Mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis, marking the beginning of a new tenure lasting thirty months. Stylianos Valyraki was elected president of the new board. Alternate members appointed are Eleni Zervoudaki, Niki Apostolaki, Eleftherios Kokogiannakis, Dimitrios Goulas, Zacharias Mavridakis, Georgios Frangiadakis, Sofia Eleftheriadou-Papadaki, Ioannis Sarris, Charalampos Loutsétis, and Eleni Fténou.

The mayor stressed during the ceremony that the responsibility undertaken by the new board extends beyond the administration of an institution and concerns the daily life and quality of life of the residents. As he emphasized, care must mean dignity, safety, human contact, and respect for the personality and path of each resident. He assured that the Municipality of Chania will continue to support the nursing home in substance, with the goal of continuous improvement of conditions and services provided.

Municipal nursing homes are among the few closed-care facilities for the elderly that operate under public supervision, at a time when demand is increasing and staffing remains the critical issue. The thirty-month tenure gives the new board a time horizon to plan interventions in infrastructure and personnel, yet no specific program or budget has been announced.
