Regional Clinics are the level of the public health system closest to citizens and typically cover settlements that lack their own hospital infrastructure. They operate under the supervision of the Health Center to which they are attached, which handles administrative support and staffing needs. In Askifou’s case, being attached to the Sfakia Health Center means the new unit joins a network that already serves the same geographic area. The report does not give details on staffing, opening hours, or the date on which the clinic will begin receiving patients.

For local residents, the significance of such a facility is directly tied to geography. Sfakia is one of the most mountainous and hard-to-reach areas of Crete, with long distances and roads that make travel difficult, especially in the winter months.
