World Tourism Day marked with event in Neapoli

The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos is organizing an event for World Tourism Day at the Neapoli Municipal Garden on Monday, 21 September 2026 at 18:30, according to a report by Cretalive. As the same source states, the event is described as «an evening of Cretan hospitality, tradition and culture», with the Municipality inviting residents and visitors to participate at the Municipal Garden venue, which serves as an established gathering point for events in Neapoli and is located in the centre of this small town of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, known also for its proximity to Agios Nikolaos, the seat of the municipality.

World Tourism Day is celebrated internationally on 27 September each year, established by the World Tourism Organisation to highlight the social, cultural and economic significance of tourism for host destinations, however the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos is proceeding with its own event earlier, on Monday, 21 September 2026, according to Cretalive. The choice of Neapoli Municipal Garden as the venue for the event, as noted by the same source, is connected to the character of the town of Neapoli, which falls under the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi prefecture, and serves as a historic centre of the broader area, with long tradition of hospitality, an element which, according to Cretalive, the Municipality sought to highlight through this year’s organization.

The organization comes at a time when road access to Neapoli has occupied local news, as a section of the North Axial Road of Crete between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos remained closed due to works from 17 to 21 September 2026, as recorded in related coverage.
