Agios Nikolaos: Inauguration of the upgraded marina

The upgrade project for Agios Nikolaos Marina was inaugurated on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in the spaces of the tourist port. According to the press release issued by the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, the ceremony began at 19:30 with the reception of guests and a tour of the new infrastructure. Attending the event and delivering remarks were Tourism Minister Olga Kephalogiannis, First Vice President of Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis, Mayor of Agios Nikolaos Manolis Menegakis, and President of the Municipal Anonymous Company of Agios Nikolaos Giorgos Astroulakis.

The project was implemented by the DAEAN and was included in the Recovery and Resilience Fund within the NextGenerationEU framework. According to project data, the budget totaled €1,907,185.81 plus VAT. The interventions include the replacement and installation of new floating berths, which were procured by the agency from Italy, power and water supply towers for vessels, shade structures, an intelligent lighting system with 41 LED fixtures, photovoltaic panels, and electric vehicle chargers in the parking area.

Five aluminum bridges were also constructed for safe access to the berths, with accessibility for persons with disabilities, while the floors in the covered parking area were restored. The upgrade was deemed necessary due to the age and deterioration of existing infrastructure and the need for compliance with modern safety standards. The approved schedule provided for completion of works by June 2026, that is, before the peak of summer recreational boat traffic.

For Agios Nikolaos, the marina functions as the gateway to maritime tourism in Lasithi and as a mooring point for vessels traveling between Crete, the Dodecanese, and the eastern Mediterranean. The ability to provide electricity and water at each berth, combined with vehicle chargers and photovoltaic panels, raises the level of service to what larger vessels now demand.
