Agios Nikolaos: free online court bookings

The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos launches its new digital platform for booking sports facilities on Monday 17 August 2026, at sports.agiosnikolaos.gr, according to a municipal announcement. Through the application, residents and visitors can book tennis, basketball and football courts in the town of Agios Nikolaos electronically and free of charge. Users log in with their personal Taxisnet credentials, so that identity is verified and fictitious bookings are avoided. Once a booking is completed, the user receives an automatic email with a QR code, along with a reminder one day before using the court.

Development was handled by the municipality’s IT Department, working with deputy mayors Giorgos Arakadakis, responsible for digital transformation, and Stergios Atsalakis, responsible for sport and the younger generation. The platform is bilingual, in Greek and English, and adapts to mobile devices, while for each facility it displays details such as the presence of lighting and available parking spaces. The municipality says the design allows the service to be extended to more municipal facilities in the future. The practical problem the application seeks to solve is familiar to every municipality with open-air sports facilities: management is usually informal, by telephone or on a first-come basis, which leads to overlapping bookings, idle hours and disputes between teams. Electronic booking with identity verification creates a record, allows the municipality to know which facilities are actually used and at what times, and provides a basis for future maintenance or expansion decisions. Keeping the service free is also a significant choice, since it decouples access to sport from cost.

For Agios Nikolaos, whose population multiplies during the summer months, the measure also has a tourism dimension, as it allows visitors to use the facilities under clear rules. The municipality has not announced how many courts are initially included in the system, nor a timetable for expanding it. The initiative adds to a series of municipal decisions on services for citizens during the summer, such as funding for lifeguard cover and the inauguration of the upgraded marina.
