Western Attica: 28.8 million euros for water networks

EYDAP has launched a tender for extensions, improvements and replacements of water supply pipes, with a total budget of 28.8 million euros, for the 4th District of Western Attica. The scope of the contract covers the municipalities of Fyli, Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Mandra-Eidyllia and Megara, meaning the entire industrial and agricultural zone west of the Attica basin. It is a framework contract for network works, which allows the company to schedule interventions during the term of the contract according to needs that arise, without requiring a new tender procedure for each individual intervention. The size of the budget places the project among the largest EYDAP has launched for the area in recent years.

Works of this category include replacing old pipes, new connections in areas undergoing residential expansion, and improvements in sections with recurring faults. In Western Attica the issue carries particular weight, as much of the network was built in different periods and with different materials, while pressures on the system vary due to industrial consumption. Water losses in aged networks are estimated internationally at significant percentages of the volume distributed, making pipe replacement a saving measure and not just maintenance. Western Attica combines heavy industry, extensive farmland and settlements that developed without unified urban planning at the same time, a combination that makes managing the network particularly complex.

The issue of network reliability has also recently concerned other Attica municipalities. In Western Attica, where distances are greater and settlements more scattered, a single fault can leave an entire neighbourhood without water for hours. The recent wildfires in Mandra and Villia also highlighted the importance of adequate water supply for the firefighting operations themselves and for refilling water tankers.
