Ano Liosia: two arrests over fatal neglect of 72-year-old

According to Greek police, the case of a 72-year-old man whose body was found on the afternoon of August 1, 2026 in the back seat of a parked vehicle in Ano Liosia has been solved. The man bore injuries to the head and torso, an appearance that initially left all possibilities open as to the cause of his death. The case was taken up by the Directorate for Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes in Western Attica following the discovery of the vehicle by traffic police in the DIAS unit, who had been sent to the scene after a report from the emergency center.

According to the preliminary investigation, on the night of July 31 the 72-year-old was with two other men in the area of Agios Stefanos, where, according to the police statement, they were attempting to remove cables from a transformer. During this operation the 72-year-old reportedly suffered electrocution and fell from a height to the ground. The two other men reportedly then placed him in a vehicle, transported him to Ano Liosia, and abandoned him there. Under warrant, in the early hours of August 4, two Greek nationals aged 68 and 72 were arrested, accused of fatal neglect, and brought before the competent prosecutor. Both are covered by the presumption of innocence until final judgment by the courts.

For Western Attica, the case sheds light on a phenomenon the region knows well: thefts of metal materials and electrical cables from infrastructure, abandoned buildings and construction sites. Beyond the damage to networks and outages they cause, such activities pose a direct risk to the lives of those who undertake them, as they bring people without equipment and knowledge into contact with energized elements. The incident joins a series of cases that have occupied local police services recently, from the looting of firefighter vehicles in Magoula to arrests for drugs and weapons in Western Attica.

The next step belongs to the justice system. The charge of fatal neglect concerns, in essence, the abandonment of a person in circumstances that threaten his life and not the causing of death with intent; how much it weighs in this particular case will be determined on the basis of the entire body of investigative material, including forensic pathology findings on the time and precise cause of death. A critical element is considered to be whether the 72-year-old was still alive when transported from Agios Stefanos to Ano Liosia, as this greatly determines the legal characterization of the act. The police statement does not clarify whether any attempt was made to notify emergency services. Police have not announced whether other persons are being sought, nor whether the autopsy has been completed, and no date has been given for the defendants’ court appearance.
