Salamina: Fire in Perani improves

A fire in low vegetation broke out on the afternoon of Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the Perani area on the island of Salamina, with the start of the incident placed around 15:54. According to information published by enikos.gr at 17:06 the same day, the fire situation had improved compared to the initial hours, although full extinguishment had not yet been achieved. Firefighting forces remained on alert for possible reignition, and according to the report, no injuries were reported from the incident.

In extinguishing the fire, according to data provided by the Fire Service, 52 firefighters operated with the assistance of 12 vehicles, two firefighting helicopters, four hiking teams and water tankers, while a drone was also used for aerial monitoring of the area. This mobilization included aerial and ground means, with the aim of containing the fire front around the residential area of Perani. At the same time, as a precautionary measure, residents of the area were evacuated from their homes and directed via Peristeriou Avenue toward Aianteio, according to enikos.gr’s report. The simultaneous use of ground and aerial means is the usual practice in fires near residential areas, as helicopters conduct water drops in areas where vehicle access is difficult, while hiking teams take control of fire spots on the ground.

Salamina is a densely populated municipal island of the Peripheral Unit of Piraeus, with access via ferry from Perama, a fact that makes any fire in low vegetation a particularly sensitive issue for residents, as such fires can spread rapidly when strong winds prevail. The Fire Investigation Service’s investigation to determine the causes of the fire is ongoing, with no findings having been released to the public so far. Residents who had been evacuated as a precaution from the Perani area are expected to return to their homes once authorities determine that there is no longer a risk of reignition.
