Piraeus: supplies collection extended

The Municipality of Piraeus has extended a collection of essential supplies and food for firefighters and volunteer firefighters through Friday 14 August. The initiative comes during a period of intense firefighting activity in Attica. On Monday 10 August, a fire in Kouvaras of the Municipality of Saronikos engaged a maximum of 197 firefighters, seven hiking units, volunteers and 42 vehicles, along with aircraft and helicopters, while international rescue teams from France and Romania also participated as part of a European pre-positioning programme.

For Piraeus, the action demonstrates how a municipal volunteer structure can serve as a channel between residents and field needs. The city is not on the fire fronts, yet the forces operating in wider Attica are supported also by such initiatives. The extension until 14 August provides time for those who did not have the opportunity to participate in the initial period.
