Piraeus: 30,526 passengers and cancelled routes

Friday, 14 August, saw the peak of the holiday exodus from Piraeus port. According to traffic data, a total of 30,526 passengers departed through the Tzelepi and Argosaronic gates during the day. Specifically, from Tzelepi gate, 21 routes were scheduled carrying 22,894 passengers, while from Argosaronic, 35 hydrofoil routes and 25 vehicle-carrying ferry routes operated, transporting 7,632 passengers. Through Sunday, 16 August, over 43,600 passengers are expected to depart from the two gates, with 194 total scheduled departures and the heaviest concentration of routes on Friday itself.

On the preceding day, Thursday, 13 August, 24 departures had been executed from Piraeus with 23,665 passengers, showing that traffic was steadily escalating toward the holiday period. The stormy northern winds significantly affected operations. Four routes did not depart in the morning: Blue Star Paros to Syros, Tinos, and Mykonos; Eurochampion Jet 2 to Syros, Mykonos, Naxos, Ios, Koufonissi, and Thira; Super Speed 4 to Paros, Naxos, and Koufonissi; and Champions League Jet 2 to Syros, Tinos, Paros, Naxos, Thira, and Heraklion.

Some vessels executed their routes with alterations to approaches at island ports. Meanwhile, a sailing ban was in effect at Rafina and Lavrio until 16:00, with both ports remaining closed for most of the day. For Saturday, 15 August, 54 routes were scheduled from Argosaronic – 32 hydrofoil and 22 vehicle-carrying ferries – with 6,546 passengers. For Sunday, 16 August, 59 departures are scheduled with 6,531 passengers.

The Coast Guard advised passengers to contact harbor authorities or shipping companies before traveling to ports, as weather-related changes could occur at the last moment. Maritime Minister Vasilis Kikilia requested increased vigilance from companies and passengers alike. Hydrofoils and fast ferries of Argosaronic are the first to be affected by wind intensity, as their safe sailing limits are lower than those of conventional ferries. The Port of Piraeus manages every August 15th – a major holiday in Greece – with the highest passenger traffic concentration of the year.

Departures are concentrated in a few hours, and facilities operate at their limits. Simultaneous cancellations shift passengers to later departures and create cascading delays throughout the system. Road traffic toward the port adds measurable pressure, with Traffic Police increasing presence at access points. Additional factors include congestion at gates, parking limitations, and coordination with neighboring ports. The concentration of traffic during peak periods requires careful planning and coordination among all maritime stakeholders.

Shipping companies deploy additional staffing and resources during this period to manage the increased volume. Ground operations must coordinate vessel movements, passenger processing, and vehicle loading efficiently. The three-day weekend represents peak travel demand, with many Greeks traveling to islands for the August 15th holiday. Alternative routes through Rafina and Lavrio ports, though affected by weather, provide additional capacity, though wind conditions limit their utility during storms.

The successful management of peak traffic flow depends on coordinated efforts between port authorities, shipping companies, traffic police, and maritime safety agencies. Weather monitoring and real-time route adjustments are essential for maintaining safe passage and minimizing disruptions. Maritime authorities continue to advise compliance with weather advisories and advance passenger planning to ensure smooth holiday travel.
