Nikaia: 43-year-old arrested with a stolen television

A 43-year-old man of Greek nationality was arrested in the act on the evening of Thursday 20 August 2026 in Nikaia, accused of theft, according to an announcement by the Hellenic Police released on Friday 21 August 2026. The man arrested is not named, nor is the victim, and the address of the home is not given. The 43-year-old is presumed innocent until the courts rule otherwise. The case concerns one of the most common incidents the police have to deal with in urban areas, a house burglary, with the difference that here the intervention took place while it was still in progress. According to the police, officers on patrol received a signal from the Immediate Response Centre about a burglary that was in progress at that moment at a home in Nikaia. Going straight to the spot, they found the 43-year-old holding a television set and other items which, the announcement says, he had just removed from the home. The officers restrained him and took him to the Nikaia Crime Prosecution and Investigation Department, where the relevant case file was drawn up. The speed of the response to the signal is, on the basis of what is described, the factor that led to the arrest before the accused could leave the scene. The case file, as emerges from the announcement, concerns the theft and does not include any additional offences.

The television set and the other items taken were returned to their owner, while the man arrested was taken before the competent public prosecutor. Nikaia belongs to the wider Piraeus area and is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Attica, with a large number of detached houses and low-rise apartment blocks. The municipality has been in the news recently for other reasons too, such as the 11 million euro project for the Agios Filippos grove. The immediate return of the items to their owner is relatively rare in burglary cases and is due here to the fact that the arrest was made in the act.
