Varnavas: 74-year-old woman driver dies in a streambed

A 74-year-old woman lost her life on the afternoon of Friday, 14 August 2026, when the car she was driving left a provincial road in northeastern Attica, overturned and ended up upside down in a streambed. The volunteer fire brigade of Varnavas, along with Fire Service crews from Nea Makri and Avlonas, took part in her extrication, using specialist equipment. The driver was a local resident and, according to local media, knew the route well. The available sources disagree on two points. Regarding the location, one version places the crash in Kapandriti, at the level of the concrete bridge, with the driver heading toward Varnavas, while two other reports place it at the large bend shortly after the entrance to Varnavas, on the road to Grammatiko, around 19:30. Regarding the death, one source states that the woman was taken by EKAV ambulance to hospital where she was pronounced dead, while another states that EKAV picked her up already dead after the extrication. Discrepancies of this kind are common when an incident occurs on the boundary between two municipalities and is covered by media with different geographic focus, without an official announcement having preceded it.

Traffic Police are conducting a preliminary investigation into the exact causes. According to local media, one of the scenarios being examined is a loss of consciousness or cardiac arrest before the vehicle left the road, a version that could only be confirmed by a forensic examination. No bulletin from Greek Police or the Fire Service was found for this specific incident, which also explains the discrepancies between the reports. The forensic examination will determine whether the death preceded or followed the vehicle leaving the road, a point crucial to how the incident is characterised.

The road network between Kapandriti, Varnavas and Grammatiko is narrow, with steep gradients and blind bends, while in several spots the guardrails are either worn or non-existent and the adjacent streambeds run right alongside the roadway. The area has also been hit by wildfires in previous years, leaving parts of the slopes stripped of vegetation and increasing runoff into the streambeds. The Municipality of Marathonas and the Municipality of Oropos have at times asked the Region of Attica for funding to install guardrails and improve signage on this network, with no implementation timeline announced.
