Mandra: thanks to Agia Varvara for the water tanker

The mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia, Armodios Drikos, expressed his thanks to the Municipality of Agia Varvara for its assistance in the major wildfire at Vilia, sending an official letter of thanks to the mayor of Agia Varvara, Lambros Michos. The letter, dated 10 August 2026, was made public on Thursday 20 August and constitutes the formal recognition of the help offered in the field. During the most difficult hours of the fire in the Municipal Unit of Vilia, the Municipality of Agia Varvara responded to the request for assistance and made a water tanker available; the vehicle was moved to the area and joined the operation supporting the firefighting forces.

The contribution of that particular vehicle proved significant for the course of the operation, as the tanker was used, among other things, to supply a firefighting helicopter with water. On a front with difficult access, the ability to resupply aerial means close to the point of the fire reduces the time between drops and allows a denser sequence of sorties. The presence of an additional water tanker at a critical moment also helped the ground forces to be resupplied faster and limited delays in extinguishing the fire, as the letter notes. In mountainous forest areas such as those of the Municipal Unit of Vilia, where water intake points are limited and distances are long, carrying water by tanker is often the decisive link in the firefighting operation.

The move highlights a practical dimension of civil protection that is rarely discussed publicly: inter-municipal solidarity at the level of equipment. The municipalities of Attica have water tankers, works machinery and staff which, if made available in good time, can cover gaps on extended fronts where needs change constantly. Agia Varvara, a municipality small in area in the western basin, lies dozens of kilometres away from Vilia, yet it made a vehicle available in an area outside its own boundaries. For Mandra-Eidyllia, which this summer has had to deal with successive fire incidents in forest and business areas, this reinforcement had an immediate operational impact.

In his letter, Armodios Drikos thanks the mayor of Agia Varvara for the immediate response and the support, making particular reference to the “message of solidarity you sent to our local community”. The public recognition comes at a time when the adequacy of local fire protection resources is at the centre of debate in several municipalities of Western Attica, with disputes over reservoirs, land clearing and funding. The next question, as the experience of Vilia itself suggests, is whether ad hoc assistance between municipalities will be captured in pre-agreed mutual support plans, so that available vehicles can be mobilised without a separate request having to be made each time at the moment of crisis.
