Keratea: car in flames on Lavriou Avenue

A vehicle was engulfed in flames while it was being driven along Lavriou Avenue, at the level of the Agios Serafeim bridge in Keratea, heading towards Athens. The incident was made public by notia.gr on Friday 21 August 2026 at 10:39. Forces from the Lavrio and Markopoulo Fire Services rushed to the spot with dispersal vehicles, while the deputy mayor for Civil Protection of the Municipality of Lavreotiki, Nikolaos Stamou, was also present with the operational vehicle “Lavreotiki 5”. The fire was quickly extinguished, its spread was prevented and no injuries were reported. The information comes from a single publication by a local outlet, without an official Fire Service bulletin.

Several details of the incident remain unknown. The report does not give the exact time at which the fire broke out, nor the type of vehicle, nor the cause of ignition. Nor has it been made known whether the occupants managed to get away on their own or whether assistance was needed, or whether traffic problems were caused and for how long. A burning shell of metal at the edge of the carriageway can, in windy conditions, spread fire to roadside grass, which is why rapid extinguishing prevents disproportionately greater consequences. The presence of firefighting forces from two services as well as a municipal civil protection vehicle reflects exactly this logic of precautionary over-coverage.

It has not been announced whether an investigation into the causes is being carried out, as is usual in vehicle fires, nor whether the vehicle was removed from the carriageway immediately and how traffic at the spot was restored.
