Koropi: fire on Varis-Koropiou Avenue

A fire broke out in Koropi, near the Agia Triada quarry and on Varis-Koropiou Avenue, with the Fire Service mobilised shortly before 20:00 on Thursday 20 August 2026. According to anatolika24, which reported the incident, dry grass, rubbish and olive trees were burning. At the time of publication the fire was still under way and spreading, while fire engines were operating at the spot and reinforcements were expected from Markopoulo and Koropi. There was no information about homes being threatened and no reports of injuries. The same outlet did not say whether residents had been given an evacuation instruction or whether traffic on the avenue had been halted.

The time it broke out, early in the evening, is among the most difficult for aerial operations, since firefighting aircraft and helicopters do not operate after sunset and the burden falls on ground forces. The material that was burning, that is dry grass and rubbish, is among the fastest at spreading flame, especially in conditions of high temperatures and winds. For Friday 21 August 2026 a high fire risk, that is category 3, was forecast for Eastern Attica, a designation that comes with heightened readiness by the services and advice to avoid any work that produces a spark or a flame.

For Koropi and the wider Eastern Attica, the geography of the spot matters. Varis-Koropiou Avenue crosses an area with quarrying activity, farmland with olive groves and scattered building, which means that a fire in grassland can quickly come close to either crops or homes. The build-up of rubbish on roadside plots recurs steadily in local discussions about fire protection, since it acts as ready fuel next to roads with constant vehicle traffic. The municipalities of the area carry out plot and roadside clearance programmes every summer, without private land always being covered. The high temperatures recorded in Attica over the same period, with the heatwave touching 38 degrees, worsen the dryness of the vegetation and reduce the margin for reaction once a fire starts.

So far no time or manner of extinguishing the fire has been announced, nor has its cause been made known. There is also no announcement about the area burned, about the final number of firefighters and vehicles that took part, or about any damage to property. Such details usually come from the official Fire Service bulletin or from the report of the investigating service, when one is carried out, and cannot be inferred from first reports.
