Koropi: traffic directions change in city center

Traffic direction changes in the Koropi city center come into effect from Thursday, August 13, 2026, within the framework of implementing the municipality’s approved traffic studies. This is the first substantial intervention in the city center’s traffic pattern since the studies were approved.

The most significant change concerns the reversal of one-way traffic on the King Constantine Avenue section, from Gini Verde Square or Agamoi, also known as Old Terminal, to Christos Zoitis Street and Monument Square. This is the city’s most central axis, where the bulk of commercial activity is concentrated.

At the same time, Alagiannis and Georgios Anagnostou Streets change direction, as does Queen Olga Avenue. With the new arrangement, one of the two routes functions as an entrance from the main avenue to the city’s western part and the other as an exit to the main avenue, creating a closed circulation loop around Koropi’s commercial center.

The municipality clarifies that the change affects exclusively the one-way section in the center and not the entire King Constantine Avenue. This clarification was deemed necessary because the avenue runs through the entire city and a large portion of it remains in two-way traffic, without any change.

A map with the new directions is expected to be posted by the Koropi Municipality, and drivers are urged to exercise caution during the first implementation days. Reversing traffic flow on a city’s central axis requires adjustment time and is usually accompanied by increased risk of confusion, especially for drivers not permanent residents of the area. The municipality has announced signage at critical points to prevent illegal crossings during the first days.

The choice of the August 15-period timing, when traffic in Mesogia is significantly reduced due to vacations, provides a period of familiarization before return to September’s normality, when commutes to the area’s schools are added, which significantly burden the center during morning hours.

The local media outlet that published the changes notes that questions remain open about policing and the passage of heavy vehicles through narrow streets, amid lack of adequate signage, while noting that municipal police units have not yet appeared in Mesogia.
