Kallithea: seeking explanations from EYDAP over seven faults

Kallithea mayor Kostas Askounis sent an urgent letter to the president of EYDAP. The trigger was seven simultaneous faults in the water supply network, which occurred within just a few hours on the morning of Sunday, August 9, 2026. The municipal administration describes the phenomenon as unprecedented. The letter sets out four specific requests to the company. As of publication, no response from EYDAP had been made known.

The first request concerns a full investigation of the incident. The Municipality is asking for an immediate and in-depth inquiry into the causes of the seven simultaneous faults. The second request concerns an official briefing, with specific and documented explanations of the conditions under which they occurred. The simultaneous occurrence of so many faults in a limited geographic area is unusual. It is usually attributed either to a sudden pressure change or to the age of the network.

The third request concerns drawing up and implementing a prevention plan, so that, as stated, “the risk of recurrence is eliminated.” The fourth concerns repair and safety. It calls for a swift, high-quality and safe completion of the repairs, as well as immediate restoration of the trenches opened in the roads. The Municipality stresses that restoring the road surface after excavation work is a matter of vital importance for the safety of pedestrians and drivers. Open trenches are a frequent cause of accidents and complaints.

The municipal administration states that it is monitoring the matter closely and will keep residents regularly informed. Faults in Attica’s water supply network are a recurring issue during the summer months. Increased consumption and high temperatures put strain on the pipes. In densely populated municipalities such as Kallithea, a single fault can affect thousands of households. Similar incidents have been recorded in other municipalities, such as the water outage in Ilioupoli caused by a burst pipe.

Kallithea also found itself at the center of a second issue within the same 24 hours. A collective of municipal employees reported a serious workplace accident involving a contract worker in the sanitation service, who fell from a moving garbage truck and is hospitalized in serious condition. The complaint calls for an investigation by the Labour Inspectorate. No statement from the municipal administration had been made public as of publication. The two issues concern different services but converge on the theme of infrastructure and equipment maintenance.

In the same area, Palaia Leoforos Poseidonos had recently been returned to traffic, as described in the report on the opening of Palaia Poseidonos. Works on the seafront continue. The Municipality has repeatedly requested coordination of the utility companies’ works. The lack of coordination leads to repeated trenching at the same spots. The issue is raised regularly by Attica’s municipalities.
