Ilioupoli: resurfacing on 20 road sections

Resurfacing and road-safety improvement works have been completed on 20 road sections and junctions of the Municipality of Ilioupoli, according to an announcement from the municipal authority. The total area of the interventions comes to about 18,955.83 square metres. The project is titled “Road Safety Improvement, Municipality of Ilioupoli” and was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, through the National Plan “Greece 2.0” and the European NextGenerationEU mechanism. Among the streets where work was carried out are Eptalofou, Armatolon, Parnonos, Souniou, Orestou and Kordeliou. The municipal authority presented the project as complete, without noting any outstanding work on individual sections.

Interventions of this kind are not limited to replacing the asphalt surface. They usually include removal of the worn layer, levelling of the substrate, adjustment of manhole cover heights and re-marking, so that the final result is safe for both vehicles and two-wheelers, which are affected more by road-surface irregularities. At junctions, improved visibility and correct signage are often the most decisive factor in reducing accidents. In densely built suburbs, the state of the road surface also directly affects the operation of public transport, as many of these streets are used by bus routes connecting the neighbourhood with the metro station.

Ilioupoli is one of the densely populated municipalities of the southern suburbs, with a steep gradient in its eastern neighbourhoods toward Mount Hymettus and a road network that carries heavy daily through-traffic to and from the centre. Maintenance works are traditionally scheduled for August, when traffic is reduced and the disruption to residents is smaller. The municipality did not announce the total cost of the project or the contractor, details that are posted on Diavgeia and the Central Electronic Register of Public Contracts. The slope of the terrain creates additional demands on stormwater drainage, an issue that comes to the fore every autumn with the first heavy rains.

Alongside the technical works, the issue of the park at Chalikaki remains open in Ilioupoli, where a residents’ committee has launched a door-to-door information campaign and is preparing a new round of action from September. The two issues show the two sides of the municipal agenda: on one hand, maintaining existing infrastructure with European funds, and on the other, the demand for open green spaces. The Recovery Fund is financing similar road-safety projects in dozens of municipalities across the country, with timelines tied to the National Plan’s milestones. The municipality has not announced whether a second phase of resurfacing will follow on other streets within 2026, nor whether interventions in pavements and accessibility ramps are planned.
