Chalandri: car overturns onto parked vehicles

A car overturned early on the morning of Monday 17 August 2026 at the junction of Karaoli and Dimitriou streets in Chalandri, after striking a parked vehicle. According to Athens Voice, the car is said to have been travelling at high speed when its front right wheel hit the rear left side of a parked vehicle. The impact sent the car off course, it overturned and came to rest on top of a second parked car. The driver got out of the wrecked vehicle unaided, injured and bleeding. No other injury was reported, as the two parked vehicles were empty and there were no pedestrians at the spot.

Police units and an EKAV ambulance rushed to the scene. The causes of the accident are being investigated by the traffic police, who will decide whether the driver bears responsibility. His identity has not been made public, nor whether he was tested for alcohol or drugs, a procedure that is as a rule applied in crashes involving injury. Traffic at the spot was temporarily managed until the vehicles were lifted and removed. The owners of the two parked vehicles can claim compensation from the insurance company of the driver at fault, if liability emerges from the incident report. The damage is recorded by the officers who attend the scene.

The incident highlights a persistent issue in the densely built suburbs of Attica: vehicles parked along narrow streets act as the first obstacle in any loss of control and often prevent a worse outcome, but at the same time they restrict visibility at junctions without traffic lights. In Chalandri, as in other municipalities of the northern suburbs, night and early morning traffic in August is considerably lighter than in winter, which encourages higher speeds on streets designed for urban movement. In the northern suburbs the problem is compounded by one-way streets with parking on both sides, where the usable width is reduced to a few metres. Municipalities have from time to time applied traffic calming measures, such as raised crossings, without a unified policy.

Road accidents on Attica’s road network remained frequent on Monday morning, with a second incident recorded on Kifissos Avenue at Metamorfosi, where a lorry collided with a car and caused a minor injury.
