Athens: Job Center marks one year of operation

The Job Center of the Municipality of Athens, which operates through Athens Development, completed one year of operation, as announced by the municipality on Thursday 24 September 2026. During this period the structure served 503 people, of which 138 found employment, while 62 people received legal or accounting advice within the framework of its operation.

The services provided by the Job Center include employment counseling, connection with the labor market, skills development, digital literacy and educational seminars, aiming to support people facing social, economic or employment obstacles. The structure is part of a broader framework of social interventions by the municipality, which also includes recruitment of staff at Community Centers of the city, structures that also address citizens in need of support. The combination of employment counseling with digital literacy and educational seminars shows that the structure treats labor market integration as an issue requiring more than simple connection with employers, including the acquisition of basic skills. The Mayor of Athens, Charis Doukas, stated that the Job Center “creates paths to independence” for those who turn to it.

The number of 138 people who found employment during the first year of operation corresponds to a percentage around one quarter of the total number of those served, while the legal and accounting advice provided to 62 people shows that part of the needs covered by the structure concerns issues beyond the actual job search itself, such as tax or insurance settlement issues. For Athens residents facing difficulties in labor market integration, the operation of a municipal structure with a combination of counseling, training and practical support constitutes an additional option in the local network of social services, beyond services provided by state bodies such as the Public Employment Service.
